CALL FOR PAPERS: 2006 Launch!
A call
for papers and a short reminder about the impending 2006 launch of:
COMPARATIVE BIOCHEMISTRY AND PHYSIOLOGY -
PART D: GENOMICS AND PROTEOMICS
Part D: Genomics and Proteomics. This section covers the broader
comprehensive approaches to comparative biochemistry and physiology
that can be generally termed as " -omics", e.g., genomics, functional
genomics (transcriptomics), proteomics, metabolomics, and underlying
bioinformatics. Papers dealing with fundamental aspects and hypotheses
in comparative physiology and biochemistry are encouraged rather than
studies whose main focus is purely technical or methodological

"IT'S
CALLED PHYSIOLOGY!" Discover
magazine recently published an interview with Nobel Laureate
(2002) Sydney Brenner, who championed
genetic approaches using Caenorhabditis
elegans as an experimental model. When asked to
comment on "systems biology", Brenner replied
"....everybody’s running around
talking about systems biology and integrative
biology. It’s
nothing new. It’s
called physiology"

BOUTILIER, ROBERT
(1954-2003)
- Developmental Physiology
notes with great sorrow the passing of Bob Boutilier on Sunday, Dec.
21st, 2003. The following is an obituary
from the Halifax Herald, published on Friday, December 26,
2003.
BOUTILIER, Robert Graeme
-BSCH 1976 Acadia, M.Sc. 1978 Acadia, Ph.D. 1981 UEA, England, FRSC
2000 Canada, D.Sc. 1996 Acadia, 50 years old, formerly from Nova
Scotia, died in Addenbrooke's NHS Trust Hospital, Cambridge, England.
He was a son of the late Robert Boutilier. Bob "Boots" to many took his
undergraduate honours degree and masters at Acadia University, where he
made many friends, and became part of the Acadia family. He went on to
take his Ph.D. in England and then to do postdoctoral fellowships at
the Max Planck Institute in Germany, the Gulbenkian Institute in
Portugal, a research station in Tahiti and the University of British
Columbia in Vancouver. His first permanent position was as an assistant
professor in biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, and was later
head of that department. Bob was then drawn back to England where he
became the editor of the Journal of Experimental Biology and Senior
Reader in the Zoology Department at the University of Cambridge. He was
also a well-loved fellow of Sidney Sussex College of Cambridge, where
he was a tutor and dean of students. Bob was without question a
consummate scientist, friend and teacher of those who had the privilege
of touching his presence. He had a wonderful gift of telling stories,
of making music and of making people laugh. He fought hard but in the
end his body failed him at too young an age. He is survived by his
mother, Anne; sister, Brenda and her husband Mark; several nieces and
nephews; plus a myriad of friends who came in contact with his
humorous, effervescent personality over the years. He will be missed as
no other. He was predeceased by his sister, Beverely and her husband
Donald. A funeral will take place in Cambridge. A memorial service will
take place at Acadia University at a later date.

RESTORING
PHYSIOLOGY TO THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS BIOLOGY CURRICULUM:
A CALL FOR ACTION. The National
Research Council-sponsored report, BIO 2010: Transforming
Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists, describes a
number of significant changes that should be made to the undergraduate
biology curriculum if we are able to adequately train students to
become the researchers of the 21st century. What should be of
concern to the physiology community is the lack of identifiable
physiology in the proposed revisions. In the article, Dee
Silverthorn, describes the report and suggests some steps that
physiologists can take to enhance our discipline in the undergraduate
biology curriculum. Advan. Physiol. Edu. 27: 91-96,

Daphnia - University of Sourth Carolina - Posted September 3, 2010
We seek to fill two post-doctoral positions for an interdisciplinary
NIH-funded project on the characterization and genetics of aging in
Daphnia. As a whole, the project involves the integration of
demographic, physiological, genomic, and functional genetic information
to understand naturally evolved variation of aging and its response to
resource heterogeneity. The project exploits naturally occurring
variation among Daphnia ecotypes with different selection pressures on
aging and different levels of resource variation. This is a
collaborative effort among the labs of PI Dr. Jeff Dudycha (evolutionary
ecology and genetics of life history), Dr. Rekha Patel (molecular
genetics of stress responses), and Dr. Sean Place (ecophysiological
genomics).
Post-Doc #1: Functional genetics (jointly advised by Patel &
Dudycha). This position will focus on developing functional genetics
techniques in Daphnia, and apply them to genes likely to be involved in
aging. We anticipate that this individual will use a variety of
techniques, such as yeast two-hybrid assays, cell culture, transgenics
and gene knockdown, and epigenetic profiling. Start date for this
position is as soon as possible.
Post-Doc #2: Ecological genomics and physiology (jointly advised by
Dudycha & Place). This position will focus on A) characterizing
gene expression profiles in Daphnia of different ages exposed to
different resource levels and B) quantifying age-dependent physiological
changes. We anticipate that this individual will use a combination of
life tables, gene expression profiling, and phenotypic measures to
characterize variation associated with aging.
Qualifications: Candidates for both positions must have a Ph.D. in
biology or related field at the start of the appointment. In addition,
candidates should be comfortable working in a diverse collaborative
environment, should have excellent written and verbal communication
skills and strong quantitative skills, and should have an intellectual
interest in the project. Candidates for PD #1 should have a strong
background in molecular genetics. The ideal candidate will have
experience in a range of molecular genetic techniques (e.g., yeast
two-hybrids, epigenetics, cell culture, antibody staining), and an
interest in advancing functional genetics in a novel model system.
Experience with Daphnia or other crustaceans, as well as transgenic
construction or gene knockdowns in invertebrates are assets, but not
expected. Candidates for PD #2 should have a strong background in
evolutionary biology, and ideally will have experience with
bioinformatics, Daphnia, and/or life history evolution. In addition,
preference will be given to candidates with experience in gene
expression analysis, invertebrate physiology, and statistical software

NIH Postdoctoral Training Grant "Training in Vascular Biology and Medicine" - Posted July 29, 2010
A new institutional National Institutes of Health training grant is now
recruiting for postdoctoral fellows, to train at the Indiana University
School of Medicine. This training program is under the direction of
Keith L. March, MD, PhD, the Director of the Indiana Center for
Vascular Biology and Medicine (ICVBM), with Michael Sturek, PhD, Chair
of the Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology, as
Associate Director. The primary focus of this training grant is
to provide post-doctoral vascular biology training to PhD, DVM, MD, or
DVM/MD-PhD fellows from an interdisciplinary perspective with a
particular emphasis on translation of basic findings into clinical
research and practice.
We have five major vascular research initiatives that constitute the
backbone of the available program. These are: 1) Vascular Stem and
Progenitor Cells; 2) Vascular Risk Factors; 3) Vascular wall cell
biology; 4) Vascular Signaling; and 5) Mechanotransduction /
Remodeling. These initiatives represent major fields of vascular
biology, in each of which our program has funded investigators and
interdisciplinary interactions. Within these major research
initiatives, there are basic scientists as well as clinician
investigators. The strength of this approach is the vertical
integration of basic and clinical research programs that enrich the
training experience, permitting the trainee to identify clinically
relevant research questions, become faceted in multiple disciplines,
and eventually acquire the skills to achieve basic insights into
pathophysiological mechanisms of vascular disease. The total research
funding for FY 2008 of the mentors within this center, was more than
$17,000,000 including more than $10,300,000 in NIH funds. Our training
program is further strengthened by our Clinical and Translational
Sciences Institute (http://www.indianactsi.org/).
In the year 2010-2011, three positions are available to continue the
program. This will bring the total positions to five for the overall
postdoctoral T32 program; we anticipate that two to three new fellows
each year will be accepted for training under this program.

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION-FUNCTIONAL RECOVERY FOLLOWING SPINAL CORD INJURY - Posted December 7, 2009
Postdoctoral positions are available to study induced respiratory and
somatic motor functional recovery following spinal cord injury. We
induce functional recovery by harnessing the capacity for spinal
plasticity, particularly plasticity induced by repetitive exposure to
acute intermittent hypoxia. For example, we investigate mechanisms of
functional enhancement in spinal synaptic pathways following acute
intermittent hypoxia (Golder and Mitchell, J. Neuroscience: 25:
2925-2932) and cellular/molecular mechanisms of intermittent
hypoxia-induced plasticity in vivo (Baker-Herman et al., Nature
Neuroscience 7: 48-55, 2004). Frequently employed techniques include
measurments of respiratory motor function on unanesthetized rodents,
neurophysiological and neuropharmacological investigations of spinal
synaptic plasticity in vivo, protein analysis (immunohistochemistry/immunoblot/ELISA)
of spinal tissues, in vivo RNA interference and quantitative RT-PCR. We
work in a rich, interactive environment for studies of respiratory
plasticity at the University of Wisconsin including the laboratories of
Dr. M. Behan, Dr. S. Johnson, Dr. T.L. Baker-Herman, Dr. R.A. Johnson,
